Walcha is a small Northern Tablelands town at the junction of Thunderbolts Way and the Oxley Highway, 425 km north of Sydney and 184 km west of Port Macquarie. It is the southern gateway to Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, with Apsley Falls 20 km east on a sealed road. Most travellers use it as a driving break; the town itself is a one-hour walk of sculptures, a pioneer cottage and a handful of pubs.

Getting around

There is no public transport in town. Walk the centre on foot; you need a car for Apsley Falls, Tia Falls and the gorge country. A 4WD with low range is needed for Riverside Camping Area and Youdale's Hut; Apsley Falls is fine in a regular car, Tia Falls may need an SUV.

A quiet, low-crime country town. The real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, cold winter nights, and gorge tracks that flood or close after rain: check park alerts before you drive out.
  • Distances between sights are long and phone coverage drops in the gorges: carry water, fuel and a paper map.
  • Winter nights drop below freezing; untreated summer diesel can gel, so let the engine warm before 9am.
  • Kangaroos and stock on the road at dawn and dusk on Thunderbolts Way and the Oxley Highway.
