Uralla is a 2,743-person town on the New England Highway (A15), 23.5 km south-west of Armidale and 88.5 km north-west of Tamworth. Its story is the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt (Fred Ward), shot at Kentucky Creek in 1870 and buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, plus a gold-rush past and a community-run foundry. The town is compact and walkable; the sights that matter are in the two blocks around Bridge Street, with a handful of short drives out to lookouts, lagoons and a private chapel you can only see from the road. Most travellers pass through on the highway or step off the daily NSW TrainLink service, which arrives mid-afternoon and leaves mid-morning.

Getting around

The town centre is flat and walkable: Bridge Street, Salisbury Street and the visitor centre are all within about 10 minutes on foot. Edwards Coaches runs weekday bus services through Uralla and to Armidale. For the lagoons, Mount Yarrowyck, Dangars Falls and the Gostwyck area you need a car; there is no useful public transport to those. The railway station is on Duke Street, a short walk from the centre, and has no ticket office.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet country town and generally safe to walk at night. The real risks are highway driving (kangaroos at dusk and dawn), summer heat and fire-ban days, and unsealed roads to the reserves after rain.
  • No ticket office at Uralla railway station and no booking agent in town: reserve NSW TrainLink seats by phone or online before you travel, and you cannot buy on board.
  • Gostwyck Chapel and Deeargee Woolshed are on private working property and can only be viewed from the roadside; no commercial photography.
  • Dangars Falls is ephemeral: it only flows after rain, so do not plan a trip around it in a dry spell.
  • Summer days are hot and the region has fire-risk days: check conditions and total fire bans before driving out to the bush reserves.
  • The foundry museum opens by appointment only: phone the visitor centre at least 24 hours ahead.
