Kainchi Dham is a small Hanuman temple and ashram on the Nainital–Almora road, 17 km from Nainital and 4 km from Bhowali, founded in 1964 around the saint Neem Karoli Baba. Most visitors come for a morning or afternoon darshan; the site itself takes 1–2 hours. Treat it as a half-day stop inside a Kumaon trip, not a destination with its own itinerary.

Getting around

The complex is compact and walkable: temple, samadhi, meditation hall and dharmashala sit on short paved paths, and no vehicles go inside. A steep path drops to the sacred stream; another trail behind the ashram climbs to a small cave. Parking is a small lot about 200 m before the gate (₹50 per car, 2026 estimate) and fills before 08:00. On festival and holiday days vehicles are stopped 2–3 km out and you walk the last stretch.

Family rooms with home-cooked Kumaoni meals, roughly ₹800–1,500 with breakfast (2026 estimate). Best if you want to be at the gate before 08:00.

Bhowali

4 km away, the practical base: budget lodges with attached baths and hot water, roughly ₹1,200–2,500 (2026 estimate), plus the nearest ATM and shops.

Nainital

17 km, 30–40 min by taxi. The widest choice of hotels and the best food; drive in for the morning.

Watch out

Safety

The ashram itself is calm and safe, including for solo women in daylight. The real risks are the mountain road, festival crowds, cash-only stalls and weak phone signal: carry rupees, arrive early and don't drive NH-109 after dark.
  • No ATM in Kainchi Dham: the nearest is in Bhowali, 4 km. Carry cash for offerings, parking and tea.
  • Mobile signal is weak in the valley; Jio and BSNL work best. The dharmashala has limited free Wi-Fi.
  • Remove shoes before the temple and samadhi; leather items such as belts and wallets are left outside.
  • Photography is allowed outdoors but not inside the temple hall or during aarti. Ask before photographing devotees.
  • Some meditation huts and Maharaj-ji's room are closed without prior permission from the ashram office.
  • The Nainital–Almora road is narrow with blind curves; monsoon landslides and winter fog can close it. Check conditions before setting out.
  • The whole area is vegetarian and alcohol-free. No meat or alcohol at or near the ashram.
  • On 15 June (Bhandara) the Bhowali–Kainchi stretch becomes one-way gridlock. Arrive a day early and stay nearby if you plan to attend.
