Mallaig is a working ferry port and fishing village of about 660 people on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands, at the end of the A830 and the West Highland Line. Almost everyone arrives for a reason: the CalMac ferry to Skye or the Small Isles, the Jacobite steam train, or the last leg of a drive up the coast. The village itself is small enough to walk end to end, so a night is enough unless a ferry timetable forces a second one.

Getting around

Everything in the village is walkable: the railway station is about 100 yards from the ferry pier. Morar is 3 miles south and reachable by train or Shiel Bus 500/501. Car hire is limited locally; check Morar Motors before relying on it.

Watch out

Safety

A very safe village; the real risks are weather, ferry disruption and midges. Tell someone your walking plan on the Morar and Knoydart paths, and carry a waterproof whatever the forecast says.
  • Trains and ferries are sometimes held for connections and sometimes not: leave a real buffer, not a ten-minute one.
  • Winter sailings to Lochboisdale and some Small Isles routes are thin or suspended; check CalMac before booking anything non-refundable.
  • Mobile signal is poor on the approach road and there is no Three coverage; download tickets and maps before you drive.
  • The Jacobite steam train sells out in summer: book ahead or you are on the regular ScotRail service.
  • Midges are bad on still, damp evenings from June to August.
