Southend-on-Sea is a Thames Estuary resort 40 miles (64 km) east of London, built around the world's longest pleasure pier at 1.3 miles (2,158 m). It works as a single day out from London by train, or one night if you want the seafront at dusk and the Saturday fireworks in autumn. Two full days is the ceiling unless you add Leigh-on-Sea and Hadleigh Castle.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Southend Victoria to the sea is about 15 min, and the seafront runs east to Thorpe Bay and west to Westcliff. An 8-km cycle track follows the seafront between Westcliff and Garon's Park; bikeshare docks sit along it and cycles are allowed on both train lines without booking. Buses (Arriva and First) are frequent by day but stop early in the evening, with no night services. Taxis are rank- or phone-booked; few black cabs, and fares rise after midnight.

Watch out

Safety

A normal British seaside town and generally safe by day. Watch the tide and slippery pebbles on the beach, keep to lit seafront areas at night, and expect the usual late-night drink crowd around the High Street.
  • Two rail lines serve Southend and a ticket for one is not valid on the other unless bought as 'any route' — check before boarding.
  • Seafront car parks fill on summer weekends; the Seaway car park is the priciest and busiest.
  • Adventure Island wristbands are colour-coded by ride height and thrill level; pre-booking online is cheaper than buying on the day.
  • The pier head has been closed since fire damage; the walkable section runs from shore to the cordoned head — check the official pier site before travelling.
  • Last buses run early evening; know your last service or budget for a taxi.
