Janitzio is the largest of five islands in Lake Pátzcuaro and the one every boat goes to. It is a steep, cobbled hill of shops and seafood restaurants topped by a 40 m statue of José María Morelos. Two to three hours covers it; the island earns a night only on 1 November, when the cemetery fills with candles for Day of the Dead.

Watch out

Safety

The island is small and calm; the real risks are the stairs, wet cobbles and the last boat. Keep to the marked paths and confirm your return time at the pier.
  • Boats stop around 18:00 outside Day of the Dead: confirm the last return at the pier before you cross.
  • The zipline runs 12:00–19:00 but often closes when business is slow: check before paying.
  • Stairs and wet cobbles are slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip.
  • Day of the Dead (1 Nov) is the busiest night of the year: boats run all night and the island is packed.
