Janitzio
Go as a half-day from Pátzcuaro, not a base: boats from the pier 07:30–18:00, about 25 min, M$100 return. Sleep here only for Day of the Dead.
Janitzio is the largest of five islands in Lake Pátzcuaro and the one every boat goes to. It is a steep, cobbled hill of shops and seafood restaurants topped by a 40 m statue of José María Morelos. Two to three hours covers it; the island earns a night only on 1 November, when the cemetery fills with candles for Day of the Dead.

- Day of the Dead (1 Nov) is the busiest night of the year: boats run all night and the island is packed.
