Dessau is the Bauhaus city: the 1925 school building, the Masters' Houses and a dedicated museum, all UNESCO-listed, plus the 18th-century Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm of parks and small palaces. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the parks and Wörlitz need a bike or the heritage railbus. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Berlin, Leipzig or Wittenberg, or as one night on a Saxony-Anhalt loop.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Bauhaus building, Masters' Houses, Georgium park and the Bauhaus Museum are all within about 20 minutes on foot. For the Garden Realm and Wörlitz, cycle — the terrain is flat and paths are good, with rentals at the Mobilitätszentrale by the main station (about €6–7 per day). The Dessau-Wörlitzer Eisenbahn railbus runs to Oranienbaum and Wörlitz at two-hourly intervals from late March to late October. Trams and buses exist but run infrequently, especially at weekends.

Watch out

Safety

Dessau is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are uneven park paths, wild boar in the meadows at night and thin late-evening transport. Standard big-city care around the station is enough.
  • Some Bauhaus sites close on Mondays between November and February: check opening days before you travel.
  • The heritage railbus to Wörlitz runs only late March to late October and on certain holidays.
  • Georgium park is open at all hours; wild boar have been reported at night — stay on lit paths after dark.
  • Long-distance buses no longer serve Dessau; arrive by train or car.
