Vadodara, still called Baroda, is Central Gujarat's cultural capital and the busiest rail junction in the state, on the Mumbai–Delhi main line. The Gaekwad maharajas left palaces, museums and a university campus, and the Old City keeps its gates and havelis. Sights are spread between Sayajigunj and the old east, so plan by cluster, not by list.

Getting around

Auto-rickshaws are everywhere but drivers refuse the meter: agree the fare first or book through Uber or Jugnoo and use the app price to negotiate. VITCOS city buses are very cheap and reach most of the city; the main stand is opposite the railway station. Distances are short — Sayajigunj to the Old City is about 3 km.

Watch out

Safety

Vadodara is generally safe for visitors by day and evening. The real risks are heat, traffic, unmetered auto-rickshaws and monsoon flooding: fix fares first, carry water, and keep to lit streets at night.
  • Summer heat: April to June regularly passes 40°C (104°F); do sights before 11:00 and after 16:00.
  • Monsoon: July and August bring most of the yearly rain, with flooding on the Vishwamitri.
  • Auto-rickshaw meters are not used; fix the price before you get in.
  • Laxmi Vilas Palace entry needs a permit arranged at the palace office — confirm hours and ticket rules before you go.
  • Some sights are closed to the public or run limited guided tours only; check before travelling across town.
