Chignahuapan is a small Puebla highland town of about 20,000 people, one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos and the country's Christmas-ornament capital. The centre is walkable in an hour; the reasons to stay are the basilica's giant carved Virgin, the Mudejar bandstand, the axolotl museum, the lake and the Quetzalapa waterfall. It works as a one-night stop between Puebla and the Sierra Norte, or as a weekend from Mexico City.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable: plaza, basilica, parish church, market and axolotl museum sit within about 10 minutes of each other. For the lake, the waterfall and the ornament factories, take a baby-blue-and-yellow taxi from the sitio by the Plaza de Armas, or the Axolot Bus sightseeing loop. Buses from Puebla CAPU run several times a day.
