Chignahuapan
Go for one night, two if you add the waterfall: a Pueblo Mágico of ornament workshops, a lake and a 14 m cedar statue, 2 h from Puebla.
Chignahuapan is a small Puebla highland town of about 20,000 people, one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos and the country's Christmas-ornament capital. The centre is walkable in an hour; the reasons to stay are the basilica's giant carved Virgin, the Mudejar bandstand, the axolotl museum, the lake and the Quetzalapa waterfall. It works as a one-night stop between Puebla and the Sierra Norte, or as a weekend from Mexico City.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Weekends and holidays fill the small bus terminal and the hotels: book ahead.
- The Quetzalapa waterfall is a rough 10 km out; agree the taxi fare and the return pickup before you go.
- Some hotels have unreliable hot water and heating at this altitude (about 2,200 m): ask before booking.
- At the lake and waterfall, use only marked paths and life jackets; the water is cold.
- Small museum and church hours change with the season: check locally the day before.
Puebla is one of Mexico's safer states and Chignahuapan is a small, calm town. Use normal precautions, keep to lit streets at night, and treat the lake and waterfall with care: cold water, no lifeguards.
