Wyndham, Western AustraliaWyndham

Give Wyndham one night, or pass through: the Big Crocodile, Five Rivers Lookout and the Afghan Cemetery fill half a day, and the good swimming holes are 100 km (62 mi) away in Kununurra.

Wyndham is a small port town at the head of Cambridge Gulf, about 100 km from Kununurra by sealed road and more than 3,000 km from Perth. It is the Kimberley's oldest settlement, built on gold, cattle and the meatworks, and today it is a working port with a handful of lookouts, cemeteries and a museum. Most travellers use it as a half-day detour from Kununurra, or as a stop on the way to the Gibb River Road. The town has no mobile signal and no free-standing pub, so plan fuel, food and cash before you arrive.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need wheels. The town sights are 1–5 km apart and the best stops (Boab Prison Tree, The Grotto, Digger's Rest) are 10–40 km out on sealed or dirt roads. Fuel is at Kimberley Motors beside the supermarket; the Shell station opposite has closed. A 4WD is preferable for Parry Creek Road and King River Road, and essential in the wet.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Great Northern Highway, about 100 km (62 mi); sealed road via Cockburn junction

The regional base: supermarket, airport, boat trips on the barrage lake and the Ord River irrigation area.

Door to door: About 45 min

Great Northern Highway south, then 2 km (1.2 mi) on a signposted dirt road

Small waterhole in a natural amphitheatre, reached by stairs carved into the rock. Do not swim: crocodiles.

Door to door: About 40 min

King River Road, about 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Digger's Rest

Hollow boab over 2,000 years old, used as an overnight lock-up in the 1890s.

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Gibb River Road, 4WD only, dry season

Too far for a comfortable return day; stay on the station or at Emma Gorge.

Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)

overnight

Door to door: About 3–4 h

Great Northern Highway south to Warmun, then Spring Creek Track, 4WD only

Entry and camping fees apply; the access track is rough and closed in the wet.

Parry Creek Road

Parry Creek Farm and Rusty Wheelbarrow, 10–20 km (6.2–12 mi) out; dirt road may not be passable in the wet.

King River Road

Digger's Rest Station, a working cattle property down a dirt road; 4WD essential.

Watch out

Safety

Wyndham is a small, quiet town and the main risks are environmental: crocodiles in all water, extreme heat from October to March, long distances with no mobile signal, and road trains on the highways. Crime is not a common concern; lock your vehicle and do not leave valuables visible at trailheads.
  • No mobile signal in Wyndham or on the approach highways (as of 2024): tell someone your plan before you leave Kununurra.
  • Do not swim in rivers, creeks or the harbour: saltwater and freshwater crocodiles are present.
  • Wet season (Nov–Mar) brings flooding and road closures; Parry Creek Road and King River Road may be impassable.
  • Road trains use the Great Northern Highway and Victoria Highway around the clock; overtake only with a long clear view.
  • Fuel and food options are limited and close early; fill up and buy supplies before you arrive.
