Milngavie is a commuter town of about 13,000 six miles northwest of Glasgow, and the northern terminus of the West Highland Way. Almost everyone who sleeps here is starting or finishing the 96-mile walk to Fort William. The town itself has a country park, a ruined castle and a handful of pubs; the Campsie Fells and the south shore of Loch Lomond need a car or a bus. Treat it as a trailhead with beds, not a destination.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable: station to trailhead obelisk is about 5 minutes. Trains to Glasgow Central or Queen Street run about every 30 min and take about 25 min. Buses reach Glasgow, Stirling and Kirkintilloch. For Mugdock Country Park you can walk about a mile north; for the Campsie Fells and Loch Lomond you need a car, a taxi or a bus.

Safety

A low-crime commuter town; the real risks are hill weather, midges, traffic on the A81 and unlit paths after dark. Emergency 999, non-urgent police 101, NHS 111.
  • Midges are worst from June to August, especially near water and at dusk: bring repellent.
  • The West Highland Way start is waymarked but the first stage crosses golf course and country park land: keep to the path and close gates.
  • Lennox Castle is a dangerous ruin: do not enter the buildings.
  • Hills weather changes fast; carry waterproofs and a paper or offline map, as 5G has not reached town.
