Milngavie
Use Milngavie as the first night and trailhead for the West Highland Way: one night, then walk north. As a sightseeing base, skip it.
Milngavie is a commuter town of about 13,000 six miles northwest of Glasgow, and the northern terminus of the West Highland Way. Almost everyone who sleeps here is starting or finishing the 96-mile walk to Fort William. The town itself has a country park, a ruined castle and a handful of pubs; the Campsie Fells and the south shore of Loch Lomond need a car or a bus. Treat it as a trailhead with beds, not a destination.

The town is small and walkable: station to trailhead obelisk is about 5 minutes. Trains to Glasgow Central or Queen Street run about every 30 min and take about 25 min.
