Kumanovo is a valley town 35 km northeast of Skopje, on the old Belgrade–Athens road and 17 km from Skopje airport. It has an Ottoman mosque, two 19th-century churches, a hilltop ossuary and a reputation for nightlife and cheap grilled food. Almost everything worth seeing sits within a 20-minute walk of New Yugoslavia Square, so a half day covers the centre; the monasteries and the spa need a taxi.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Taxis are the practical way to reach the railway station, the spa and the outlying monasteries; agree the fare or check the meter before you set off. Suburban buses and minivans leave the centre roughly every 30 minutes but are not well signposted.

Watch out

Safety

Kumanovo is generally calm for visitors; the practical risks are unlit pavements after dark, late-night bar disputes and taxis without a meter. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • The railway station is 2.8 km southwest of the centre: take a taxi with bags.
  • Only about two trains a day run to and from Skopje: check times before you plan around the train.
  • Bars and clubs in the Garnizon area can run late; keep to licensed taxis at night.
  • Some village monasteries and the Tabanovce mosque are locked or in poor repair: ask locally before travelling out.
