Kratovo is a town of about 6,900 people built inside the crater of an extinct volcano on the western slopes of Mount Osogovo. It was a mining and minting centre under Serbian and then Ottoman rule, and six medieval towers and five stone bridges still stand. Almost everything is walkable, so a single night covers it; most travellers see it as a stop on the road between Kumanovo and Štip.

Getting around

Walk. The whole town is compact but built on crater slopes, so expect uphill and downhill stretches between the river, the towers and the museum. Driving in is fine, parking in the narrow streets is not.

Watch out

Safety

Kratovo is a small, quiet town and the usual risks are practical: uneven stone streets on crater slopes, locked or unlit sites after dark, and no card machine in small places. Carry cash and a torch-free phone.
  • Small guesthouse and hotel capacity: book before you commit to a night here.
  • Some towers and churches are locked or in rough condition; the Clock Tower is the reliable one to enter.
  • Agree the taxi price before you get in, especially from Kumanovo or Skopje.
  • Cash is safer than card in small restaurants and guesthouses.
