Nundle is a small New England village founded in 1852 after gold was found at Hanging Rock, 59 km south-east of Tamworth. Everything worth seeing sits on two streets or within a 20-minute drive, so it works as a single overnight stop on a Tamworth or New England loop, or as a slow day trip. There is no taxi and no local bus: you need your own car, and you need cash, because there is no bank and no ATM in town.

Getting around

Private transport is essential. There is no taxi and no local bus in Nundle, and the nearest car-rental agencies are in Tamworth and Quirindi. The village itself is walkable in 10 minutes end to end; Hanging Rock Lookout is 8.5 km south-east and Chaffey Dam 17 km north, both by car on partly unsealed roads. Fuel is available at the café on Jenkins Street during opening hours.

Safety

Nundle is a quiet, low-crime country village and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving: wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, unsealed sections after rain, and long gaps between fuel stops.
  • No banks and no ATMs in Nundle: bring enough cash and use EFTPOS where you can. Bank@Post at the post office handles Commonwealth, Westpac and NAB agency business on weekdays only.
  • Fuel is limited to one outlet with daytime hours; fill up in Tamworth or Quirindi before you arrive.
  • Roads to Hanging Rock Lookout and south towards Moonan Flat include unsealed sections: check conditions after rain and avoid them in a low-clearance car.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy outside the village; download maps before you leave the highway.
