Nyíregyháza is the seat of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county and the largest city in eastern Hungary, about three hours by train from Budapest. Almost everything a visitor wants sits 6 km north in the Sóstó district: a salt lake, a thermal bath complex, one of Hungary's best zoos and a rural open-air museum. The centre itself is a grid of squares, churches and small museums that fills half a day. Most travellers pass through on the way to Debrecen or the Ukrainian border; a single night in Sóstó is enough, two if you want a full spa day.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; the train station sits 15–20 min on foot from Kossuth tér. Szabolcs Volán buses cover the city and region — bus #8 (not #8A) runs from the station and centre to Sóstó. Buy tickets at a newspaper kiosk or from the driver for more. Bolt and Szabolcs Taxi both work from an app.

Safety

Nyíregyháza is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are thin late-night transport to Sóstó, summer heat at the baths and pickpockets at the weekend flea market.
  • Sóstó is 6 km from the centre: do not book a centre hotel expecting to walk to the lake.
  • The lake baths (Tófürdő) open only in July–August; the other baths run a summer season, roughly June–August — check dates before you travel.
  • Some spa and museum tickets are cash-friendly but card acceptance varies; carry a little forint.
  • The flea market by the airport runs at weekends and is a pickpocket spot in crowds.
