One night, two if you add Naruto's whirlpools or the Iya Valley: Tokushima is a transport hub, not a sightseeing base.
Tokushima is the capital of Tokushima prefecture and the main transport hub of eastern Shikoku, with a compact centre you can walk in an afternoon. Its fame is the Awa Odori dance festival in mid-August; outside those four days the city is a staging point for the Naruto whirlpools, the indigo workshops of Aizumi and the Iya Valley. Most travellers pass through in a night or use it as a base for the region.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Bikes can be rented next to JR Tokushima Station for about ¥500 a day. Buses reach the castle, the indigo house and the seaside hostel; the Mount Bizan ropeway leaves from beside the Awa Odori Kaikan.

- Last buses to outlying stops such as Omiko leave in the late afternoon; check the return time before you go.
