Durham is a compact cathedral city on a tight loop of the River Wear, 15 minutes by train from Newcastle and about 3 hours from London. The Norman cathedral and castle share a UNESCO World Heritage listing, and the old peninsula is small enough to cover on foot in a morning. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Newcastle or a single overnight on the East Coast Main Line; two nights only pays off if you add Beamish or the county's mining heritage.

Getting around

Walk. The centre is compact and driving is tedious, with almost no roadside parking on the peninsula. The Cathedral Bus links the railway station, the university, the city centre and the castle, Monday to Saturday, £1 adult. Park & Ride sites on the edge of the city are the practical option if you arrive by car.

Safety

A small, low-crime city; the real risks are the steep, cobbled lanes after rain, dark riverbank paths at night, and the station-to-centre climb with luggage.
  • The railway station sits above the city: the walk down involves steps or a long steep road, so allow 15 min with luggage.
  • The peninsula streets are narrow, cobbled and steep in places; pavements are tight for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
  • A city-centre congestion charge applies in the Market Place area between 10:00 and 16:00, with no charge on Sundays and bank holidays; pay before midnight.
  • Durham Castle is a working university college: it closes to visitors at times for students and events, so check before travelling.
  • The Miners' Gala (usually the first Saturday in July) fills the city; book beds and trains well ahead.
