Durham
Give Durham one full day and one night: the cathedral, castle and river loop are a half-day, and the city is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes.
Durham is a compact cathedral city on a tight loop of the River Wear, 15 minutes by train from Newcastle and about 3 hours from London. The Norman cathedral and castle share a UNESCO World Heritage listing, and the old peninsula is small enough to cover on foot in a morning. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Newcastle or a single overnight on the East Coast Main Line; two nights only pays off if you add Beamish or the county's mining heritage.

Walk. The centre is compact and driving is tedious, with almost no roadside parking on the peninsula. The Cathedral Bus links the railway station, the university, the city centre and the castle, Monday to Saturday, £1 adult.
