Kurilsk is the administrative centre of Iturup Island in the Kuril chain. The town is small (about 1,500 people) and functions as a base for exploring Iturup's volcanoes, hot springs and abandoned Japanese fortifications. Most visitors arrive by air from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk or by seasonal boat. One full day covers the town; add days for hikes and the island's other settlements.

Safety

Kurilsk is safe for travellers who respect the wilderness. The main risks are bears (hike with a guide), sudden weather changes, and unreliable transport. Keep your passport and visa with you; Sakhalin Oblast is a border zone and checks can occur.
  • Flights and boats are weather-dependent; cancellations are common. Build in buffer days.
  • No ATM on Iturup — bring enough rubles for your stay.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy outside Kurilsk; check with your operator.
  • Bears are present on Iturup — never hike alone without a guide and bear spray.
