Kurilsk is the administrative centre of Iturup Island in the Kuril chain. The town is small (about 1,500 people) and functions as a base for exploring Iturup's volcanoes, hot springs and abandoned Japanese fortifications. Most visitors arrive by air from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk or by seasonal boat. One full day covers the town; add days for hikes and the island's other settlements.
