Wismar

Give Wismar one full day and one night: the UNESCO old town is small, walkable and done in a day; add a second night only for Poel island or the coast.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Wismar is a 13th-century Hanseatic port on the Baltic whose brick Gothic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It sits between Lübeck and Rostock on the A20 and is reached by regional train via Bad Kleinen. The centre is compact enough to cover on foot in a day, which makes it a good one-night stop on a Baltic coast route rather than a base for a week.

Watch out

Safety

Wismar is a small, low-crime town and the centre is safe on foot day and night. The real risks are cobblestones, cold Baltic wind and rain, and cash-only check-ins: carry euros and a card.
  • Cobblestones in the old town: wear shoes with grip, not heels.
  • St. Nikolai's nave has been under restoration for years: check what is open before you pay to enter.
  • Accommodation tax is charged locally on top of the quoted room rate; ask whether the price includes it.
  • Some smaller hotels and guesthouses are cash only: carry euros.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for HAM and BER: last train times via Bad Kleinen, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: market square and Wasserkunst, the three churches, Fürstenhof, harbour and Wassertor.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours (St. Georgen, Marienkirchenturm, Rathauskeller) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile arrival fixtures (late train, rain, cash-only check-in) so gates A–D can go green.
