Hampyeong함평

Skip unless you are visiting during the Butterfly Festival (late April–early May). Otherwise, pass through: a half-day is enough for the county's main sights.

Hampyeong is a rural county in South Jeolla, best known for its annual Hampyeong Butterfly Festival, which draws over a million visitors. Outside the festival, the area offers quiet countryside, a few temples and butterfly-themed attractions. Most travellers use it as a short stop between Gwangju and Mokpo.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • South Korea ↗Check K-ETA and visa status on the official sites before you fly; the list of nationalities exempted from registering online changes year by year.
  • South Korea ↗Google Maps gives poor walking and driving directions in Korea; use Naver Map or Kakao Map for routes.
  • South Korea ↗Buy a T-money card (or use a phone-based transit pass) for subway and buses; it also pays at convenience stores and many taxis.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The main risk is traffic on rural roads; watch for tractors and farm vehicles. During the festival, pickpocketing is possible in crowds.
  • The Butterfly Festival is extremely crowded on weekends: arrive before 10:00.
  • Outside the festival, many restaurants and shops close early.
  • No English is spoken outside the festival grounds; have a translation app ready.
