  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Baxter Springs is a small southeast Kansas town on the 13-mile Kansas stretch of Route 66, 22 km west of Joplin, Missouri. It has a mining and Civil War story, a restored 1930s service station that serves as the Kansas Route 66 visitor centre, and a local museum. There is no public transit and almost nothing open in the evening, so it works as a half-day stop on a drive rather than a place to sleep for several nights.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need a car. There is no local bus or rail service, and the sights sit 2–4 km apart along Military Avenue and US 166. Everything in town is a short drive; walking the old main street is fine but the cemetery and campground are too far on foot in summer heat.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Galena, Kansas

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Drive west on Alt US 69 / old Route 66

Small mining town with Route 66 murals; pair it with Baxter Springs in one afternoon.

Joplin, Missouri

go

Door to door: About 25–30 min

Drive east on US 166 to I-44

Best choice for chain hotels, supermarkets and a wider range of restaurants.

Miami and Picher, Oklahoma

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Drive south on US 69

Picher is a former mining town with large waste piles; stay on public roads and do not enter closed areas.

Independence, Kansas

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Drive west on US 166 then north on US 75

Long for a half-day; better as a stop on a longer southeast Kansas loop.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Military Avenue (Route 66 strip)

The old motel strip; the Baxter Inn is here. Book ahead and expect basic rooms.

Riverside Park campground

Tent and RV sites on the Spring River at the east edge of town; get a permit from the police department first.

Joplin, Missouri

22 km east with a full choice of chain hotels; the practical base for this stretch of Route 66.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small town; the real risks are long empty drives, summer heat and severe-weather season (spring storms, occasional tornado warnings). Keep a weather app and know where to shelter.
  • No public transit and no rideshare guarantee: arrange your own car.
  • Many businesses close by early evening and some shut on Sundays and Mondays — check hours before you build a day around them.
  • Summer heat and humidity; carry water if you walk the Route 66 strip.
  • The cemetery and campground sit outside the centre: drive, don't walk, on US 166.
