Purbalingga is a small Central Java town on the southern slope of Mount Slamet, known for its waterpark, aquarium and eyelash factories. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Dieng Plateau or use it as a cheap stop between Purwokerto and Banjarnegara. Two nights is enough for the town and its family attractions.

Getting around

BRT Trans Jateng covers the town for a flat Rp4,000 fare. Orange angkot serve the wider regency (Bobotsari, Bukateja and other districts) at low fares. Ojek and ride-hailing apps work in town; a scooter rental is the easiest way to reach Owabong and the aquarium.

Safety

Purbalingga is a low-crime small town; the real risks are wet-season flooding, motorbike traffic and unlit roads after dark. Use ride-hailing or a hotel-arranged car at night.
  • Wet-season downpours Dec–Mar can flood low roads and close waterpark slides — check before you go.
  • Owabong and Purbasari have separate tickets and short opening hours; arrive before 15:00.
  • Angkot and BRT stop running in the evening; plan your last ride back before dark or book an ojek.
  • Mount Slamet is an active volcano: check the official status before any hike.
