Anaheim Hills

Skip as a base unless you have a car and want canyon trails and golf: one night, or a half-day stop between Anaheim and Irvine.

Anaheim Hills is a hilly, car-dependent residential district of the city of Anaheim, cut off from central Anaheim by the Santa Ana River and the 91 Freeway. It has no theme parks and no walkable core. What it does have is canyon trailheads, a public golf course and quick freeway access to Disneyland, Irvine and Orange. Come for an afternoon of trails or a round of golf, not for a sightseeing day.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: the district is spread over hills with no useful bus coverage for visitors. Rideshare works for short hops but wait times can run long from trailheads and the golf course. From here the 91 Freeway reaches Disneyland in about 15 min and the 55 reaches Irvine in about 25 min outside rush hour.

Worth it for the museums and the downtown food halls; check which district you are heading to.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Santa Ana Canyon Road and Fairmont Blvd

The closest thing to a local centre: restaurants, a supermarket and two Marriott-brand hotels within a few minutes' drive.

Festival Drive, near the 91

Highway-side hotel cluster; convenient for a one-night stop with a car, nothing to walk to.

Yorba Linda side (north of the 91)

More hotel and dining choice, 5–10 min further north; useful if Anaheim Hills itself is full.

Watch out

Safety

Anaheim Hills is a low-crime, residential area and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving (freeway congestion and aggressive lane changes), heat on exposed trails and wildfire-season smoke and closures.
  • Rush hour on the 91 and 55 is heavy on weekday mornings and late afternoons: add 20–30 min to any drive.
  • Trailheads have small car parks that fill on weekend mornings; go early or park legally on the street.
  • Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 32 °C (90 °F) with little shade on the trails: carry water.
  • Wildfire season (roughly Sep–Nov) can bring smoke, road closures and power cuts: check local alerts before hiking.
