Batticaloa is a lagoon city, not a beach city: the old town sits on Puliyanthivu island, the water is shallow and the sea beaches have no protective reef, so most swimming happens at Pasikudah, 35 km north. It is the second city of the Eastern Province and far quieter than Trincomalee, with thin tourist infrastructure and a Tamil Hindu and Catholic Burgher past. Come for the fort, the lagoon at night and the food, not for resort life.

Getting around

The old town is compact and walkable. Tuk-tuks are everywhere: agree the fare before you get in, roughly Rs 100 per km as a rule of thumb. Sri Lanka Transport Board buses and private vans cover the district and the Pasikudah road.

Watch out

Safety

Calm and low-key, but the real risks are water and roads: no sea swimming off town, no unlicensed lagoon boats, and long bus transfers on two-lane roads. Bottled water only.
  • Tap water is mostly well water and quality has declined; drink bottled or boiled water only.
  • Sea swimming off Batticaloa town is unsafe — no protective reef. Swim at Pasikudah instead.
  • Agree tuk-tuk fares in advance; there is no meter.
  • The lagoon is tidal and shallow; go with a boatman who knows it, especially on the night singing-fish trip.
  • The northeast monsoon (Nov–Feb) can close roads and cancel boats.
