Kokkola is the largest town in Central Ostrobothnia and a stop on the west-coast rail and road corridor, just under 4 hours by train from Helsinki and on the way to Oulu. Its draw is Neristan, one of Finland's best-preserved wooden old towns, plus a small museum quarter and a summer ferry to Tankar Island. The station district is modern and bland; the sights sit within a short walk north and south of it.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: Neristan, the Museum Quarter and the stations are all within about 15 minutes on foot. City buses 4 and 5 run hourly from the centre to Halkokari and the western dockland; the Matkahuolto route planner covers local lines. Bikes can be rented and repaired at Pyöräliike Lybäck on Isokatu (M–F 09:00–17:00, Sa 10:00–14:00). Tier e-scooters cover the centre. Taxis: Taksi Kokkola, Kokkolan Aluetaksi and iTaksi, plus the Valopilkku and 02 Taksi apps.

Watch out

Safety

Kokkola is a low-risk small city; the practical issues are winter ice on pavements, short daylight in midwinter and weekend nightlife noise around the central hotels.
  • The railway station is cold and shuttered in the small hours, when northbound sleepers call; the waiting room opens Su–F 07:00–18:00, Sa 07:00–15:30.
  • Two of the four Museum Quarter buildings (natural history and gem collections) have been closed since a fire in January 2019: check before you go.
  • The Tankar ferry runs June–August only, roughly noon out and mid-afternoon back, and sails from Meripuisto 2.5 km north of the centre.
  • Winter days are short and icy; pavements are slippery and many seasonal sights shut outside summer.
