Quetzaltenango — Xela to everyone local — is Guatemala's second city, at 2,333 m in the Western Highlands. It is a working city, not a showpiece: colonial and Belle Époque buildings around a central park, a huge market, cheap one-to-one Spanish schools and volcano or hot-spring hikes within an hour. Two or three nights covers the city and one hike; a week is normal if you study Spanish. It is cooler and quieter than Antigua, and it is the base for the highlands rather than a stop on the Antigua–Atitlán circuit.

Getting around

The centre is walkable by day: Parque Central to the market is about 10 minutes on foot. Minibuses thread the whole city for a few quetzales; city buses are slower and less frequent. Taxis are cheap and the normal way to move after dark — agree the fare before you get in and note the number. For villages, chicken buses leave the Minerva terminal through the day.

Watch out

Safety

Xela is a normal working city and fine by day in the centre; the real risks are walking alone after dark, unlicensed taxis, altitude on your first day and rain on volcano hikes. Take taxis at night, agree the fare first, and keep to the market and park areas in daylight.
  • Do not walk the centre alone after dark; take a taxi from a square, not a side street.
  • Do not drink tap water; buy purified water or use a hostel filter.
  • At 2,333 m the first day is tiring — drink water, go easy on alcohol, and acclimatise before any volcano hike.
  • Volcano hikes: go with a guide, start early, and expect cold wind and rain at the top even in the dry season.
  • Shuttle and bus times change; confirm the day before and never plan to arrive after dark.
