Kosai湖西市

Kosai is a half-day stop for the Arai checkpoint and Honkō-ji temple, not a base. One night if you want boat races or a quiet lake-side evening.

Kosai sits on the shore of Lake Hamana in western Shizuoka, best known for the Arai Sekisho — the only surviving original checkpoint building from the Tokaido highway. The city also holds Honkō-ji temple with a National Important Cultural Property hall. Most travellers pass through on the way to Hamamatsu or beyond; a few hours are enough unless you stay for the boat races.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Safety

Kosai is a quiet, safe city. The main risk is limited English and sparse public transport after dark; plan your return to the station.
  • Arai Sekisho closes at 16:30; arrive by 15:00 to see both the checkpoint and archives.
  • Boat races have their own schedule; check the official site before going.
  • English signage is limited outside the checkpoint and temple.
