Alliance is a high-plains railroad town of about 8,500 people in the Nebraska Panhandle, at the junction of US-385 and NE-2, 79 mi (127 km) north of I-80. Almost everyone comes for Carhenge, the 1987 car replica of Stonehenge, 3 mi north of town. Add the Knight Museum, Dobby's Frontier Town and a walkable downtown grid, and you have a solid half-day plus a night. It sits in Mountain Time, so clocks move back an hour coming from the east.

Getting around

You need a car. The grid is numbered streets east–west and named avenues north–south, with several one-way streets, so read the signs before turning. Downtown is the Box Butte Ave and E 3rd St intersection. Carhenge is 3 mi north on Flack Ave/NE-87. No useful public transit.

Watch out

Safety

Alliance is a small, quiet town and violent crime is low. The real risks are driving: winter ice and wind on open highway, deer and hail in summer, and long gaps between services.
  • Mountain Time: set your clock back an hour if you drive in from the east.
  • Winter brings wind, snow and ice; summer brings fast afternoon thunderstorms and hail on open prairie.
  • Cell coverage thins out on the back roads; download offline maps before leaving town.
  • Fuel up in town: services are sparse between Alliance, Chadron and Scottsbluff.
  • Museum and restaurant hours are seasonal and short; call or check the official site the day before.
