Tauranga is the Bay of Plenty's largest city, built around a sheltered harbour with the volcanic cone of Mauao at its mouth. The suburb of Mount Maunganui — 'the Mount' — holds the beach, the surf and most of what you came for, 5 km north of the downtown CBD. Two nights covers the summit walk, the beach and a day trip; three if you add Rotorua or the kiwifruit country around Te Puke.

Safety
- The Mount's beach has surf and rips: check local surf lifesaving advice and swim where lifeguards are on patrol.
- Summer holiday traffic on SH2 and the harbour bridges can be heavy; allow extra time on Fridays and long weekends (check).
- Cruise-ship days bring crowds to the Mount's cafés and the Mauao car parks; go early (check).
- Sun here is strong even on cloudy days: cover up and carry water on the summit track.
