Tauranga is the Bay of Plenty's largest city, built around a sheltered harbour with the volcanic cone of Mauao at its mouth. The suburb of Mount Maunganui — 'the Mount' — holds the beach, the surf and most of what you came for, 5 km north of the downtown CBD. Two nights covers the summit walk, the beach and a day trip; three if you add Rotorua or the kiwifruit country around Te Puke.

Bayhopper buses (BayBus) cover Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa; cash fares and a day pass, with a SmartRide card saving about 20% on single rides. Routes 1 and 2 link the Mount and the CBD in roughly 30–45 min. A car is the practical choice for day trips to Rotorua, Te Puke or Waihi Beach.
