Give Carlinville half a day on a Route 66 or Amtrak run: walk the square and the Sears Homes streets, then move on. One night at most.
Carlinville is a Macoupin County seat of about 5,700 people, 12 miles off I-55 and on the Amtrak Lincoln Service between Chicago and St. Louis. Its draw is a compact historic square, the 1870 courthouse and the country's largest cluster of Sears Catalog Homes. Two to four hours covers it on foot; the surrounding state park, orchard and winery need a car.

- Most square shops and the small restaurants close by late afternoon and on Sundays; plan eating around that.
