Diani is Kenya's most built-up South Coast beach, about 30 km south of Mombasa and reached by the Likoni ferry or a short flight to Ukunda. It is a beach-and-pool base with diving, kitesurfing and reef trips rather than a sightseeing town. Three to five nights fits most trips; the dry months from late November to mid-March are the best window, and April to June is the main rainy season.

Getting around

Matatus run the Diani Beach Road from early morning to evening and are the cheapest option. Tuk-tuks suit short hops and taxis are the safest choice at night; agree the fare before you get in. Ride-hailing apps work in the area and often undercut street taxis. Boda-bodas are the cheapest and the most dangerous — avoid them. Renting a car is not advised unless you hire a driver.

Watch out

Safety

Diani is a beach resort, not a dangerous city, but petty theft, overcharging and beach approaches are routine. Use taxis after dark, agree fares first, and treat April–June sea conditions with respect.
  • Agree every fare before the ride starts; tourists are routinely overcharged.
  • The Likoni ferry runs 24/7 but is very busy at peak times — allow extra time for Mombasa airport runs.
  • Beach and bar approaches offering company or massage usually want money, not friendship; take the usual precautions.
  • April–June brings the main rains and rough seas; some boat trips to Kisite are only partly advisable then.
  • Do not leave bags unattended on the beach, and keep valuables in the room safe.
