DisneylandDisneyland Resort

Two days minimum — one per park — and buy dated tickets before you fly; a single day here means choosing Disneyland Park over California Adventure.

Disneyland is the 1955 original: two theme parks, three hotels and Downtown Disney, all packed into a walkable block in Anaheim, about 40 km south of Los Angeles. You can walk between both parks in a minute or two, which is why most visitors stay two or three nights and skip the car. Crowds, not distance, set the pace: 17.2 million people visited Disneyland Park in 2023, so dates and ticket type matter more than anything else you book.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Inside the resort everything is on foot; the Disneyland Railroad loops the park and the Monorail links Tomorrowland with Downtown Disney (park admission needed to board at Downtown Disney). Trams run from the Mickey and Friends, Pixar Pals and Simba structures, and buses from the Toy Story and Pumbaa lots, until an hour after the later park closing. Off-property, a car is easiest, but many hotels and restaurants are directly across the street.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

On-property (Disneyland Hotel, Grand Californian, Pixar Place)

Walk to the gates in 5–10 min and use early-entry perks; highest price, book months ahead.

Harbor Blvd across from the entrance

About a dozen off-property hotels within a 10-min walk; the best value if you want to skip a car and take midday breaks.

Katella Ave and Convention Center area

5–20 min walk or a short shuttle; more rooms, often cheaper on non-event dates.

Anaheim Resort further out / Garden Grove

Hotel shuttles run to the resort but schedules can be limited and may stop at several hotels.

Watch out

Safety

Anaheim's resort district is busy and well lit, with security in the parks and the esplanade. The real risks are heat and dehydration in summer queues, road crossings on Harbor Blvd, and pickpocketing in dense evening crowds — keep bags zipped and use the marked crossings.
  • Dated tickets and park reservations: check the official site before you travel — no valid date, no entry.
  • Christmas week and Thanksgiving are the busiest periods; weekends and spring break are next.
  • Parking is charged per car and per night at the hotels; rates change — check the official site.
  • Off-season visits mean refurbishments: some rides close for maintenance and seasonal overlays are not running.
  • Prices shown in the US exclude sales tax; tipping is expected at sit-down restaurants (18–22%).
