Give Ijevan one night as a market-and-canyon stop between Dilijan and the Georgian border, not a base: the town itself is a half-day on foot.
Ijevan is a working town of about 20,500 people on the Aghstev river, 25 minutes north of Dilijan and close to the Georgian border. It has the biggest farmers' market in the area, a wine-brandy factory, a dendropark, and the Yenokavan canyon and Makaravank monastery within a short drive. Most travellers pass through on the Yerevan–Tbilisi road; one night is enough unless you are hiking the Tavush villages.

Getting around
The centre is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. For Yenokavan, Makaravank, Kirants or the wine factory you need a taxi, a hired car or a tour; local taxis are cheap but drivers rarely speak English, so have the destination written in Armenian.

Safety
- Do not walk or drive onto unmarked tracks near the Azerbaijan border east and north of town: read your own government's travel advice first and stay on the main roads.
- The road to Kirants and Acharkut monasteries is partly mud and can be impassable after rain.
- Some village churches and monasteries in the border zone are closed or reachable only with permission: ask at the tourist information office before you set out.
- The tourist information office may not have an English speaker on duty; go in the morning on a weekday.
- Cash is king outside the centre; many guesthouses and workshops take dram only.
