Cheorwon is a rural county on the DMZ in Gangwon, 1.5 h by direct bus from East Seoul. The Korean War frontline sites (Second Tunnel, Peace Observatory, Woljeong-ri Station, Labor Party Building) sit inside the Civilian Control Zone and are reachable only on the official DMZ Peace Tour from Goseokjeong. The rest is Hantan River geology and, from November to March, one of Korea's largest red-crowned crane roosts. One night covers the tour plus Goseokjeong; two nights add the Jusangjeolli Path and Soyisan.

Getting around

The county is large and the sights are spread out. Rural buses radiate from Dongsong and Sincheorwon and run a few times a day; T-money and Cashbee cards work. Taxis are the practical option for trailheads and remote sites — use Kakao T or a local call-taxi number. Bicycles rent at Goseokjeong. Security sites are off-limits on foot: you must join the official DMZ Peace Tour shuttle from Goseokjeong.

Watch out

Safety

Cheorwon is a military border area, not a dangerous one: the real risks are CCZ rules (ID, guided access only), winter cold down to −20°C, and unlit rural roads at night. Keep your passport on you for the checkpoint.
  • The Second Tunnel, Peace Observatory and other CCZ sites are entered only on the official DMZ Peace Tour: no independent access, and you need photo ID (passport) for the checkpoint.
  • Some tour sites close on Mondays or on military training days: check the county site before you travel.
  • Winter lows reach −20°C and below; the ice-trekking festival depends on the river freezing — dates are announced late.
  • Rural buses stop early and English support on Kakao/Naver Maps is limited for country routes.
  • Taxis between distant districts carry surcharges; agree the fare or use the meter.
