Aculco is a small Otomí-founded town in Mexico State, about 40,000 people, on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro and on the Pueblos Mágicos list. It is a weekend break for Mexico City couples: white cobbled lanes, two basalt-column waterfalls, a Franciscan church from 1540 and a cheese trade. Two nights is the maximum useful stay; one is enough for most.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable; cobbles are uneven, so wear shoes you can walk in. For the waterfalls and outlying hotels take a local taxi, agreed on price before you get in. No metro or city bus network worth using.

Watch out

Safety

A small town with a low street-crime profile; the real risks are the waterfall descents, unlit lanes after dark and the drive in on mountain roads. Use 911 for anything urgent.
  • Waterfall paths are rocky and slick after rain; the descent to the basin is steep.
  • Cold showers are normal in older posadas: ask before you book if hot water matters.
  • Weekend rooms in the centre sell out to Mexico City visitors; book ahead for Saturday nights.
  • Bullfights at the Garrido Varela arena are seasonal (roughly Oct–Nov): check locally before planning around one.
  • Altitude is around 2,400 (≈ US$130) m: pace the first afternoon.
