Comayagua was founded in 1537 and served as Honduras's capital for stretches of the colonial and republican eras, which is why a compact grid of 16th- to 18th-century churches survives here. It is also the town next to Palmerola International Airport (XPL), the country's main gateway since 2021, so most travellers see it on the way in or out rather than as a destination in itself. The centre is walkable in a few hours; the rest of the appeal is food, a museum or two, and low prices.

Getting around

The historic core is flat and small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Taxis are plentiful and cheap; agree the fare before you get in. For the airport, Villamar Park or El Cristo de Cane you need a taxi or a car.

Watch out

Safety

Comayagua is calmer than Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula, and the colonial core is fine on foot by day. Keep to lit streets after dark, take taxis rather than walking long distances at night, and treat the tap water as unsafe.
  • Do not drink tap water anywhere in Honduras; stick to bottled or purified water.
  • Agree taxi fares before entering the cab; rates rise after 18:00 and again late at night.
  • Street food and small comedores are not tightly regulated: eat where turnover is high and food is cooked to order.
  • Afternoon downpours in the wet season flood low streets quickly; carry a light rain shell.
  • ATMs are limited outside the centre: withdraw lempiras in Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula if you can.
