Give Mount Aso one full day and one night: check the crater access page the morning you go, and skip the rim if the alert level is raised.
Mount Aso is an active volcano with one of the world's largest calderas, in Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu. The draw is the Nakadake crater rim, the grass cone of Komezuka and the walking trails above the caldera floor. Access to the rim is closed whenever gas or wind readings turn bad, so the trip is a gamble you check on the day. Most travellers sleep one night in Aso town or Minamiaso and move on by the Hohi line.

Getting around
The JR Hohi line links Kumamoto and Aso town; the Takamori line runs south through the caldera. Buses reach the crater area and the museum but are infrequent, and the crater road can close without notice. A rental car is the practical way to see Komezuka, the springs and the rim in one day.

Watch out
Safety
- The crater rim closes when gas or wind conditions change: check the official restriction page before you set out.
- Volcanic gases can be lethal for people with heart or lung conditions; leave the area if you feel unwell or hear a warning.
- Do not climb Komezuka; it is closed to protect the cone.
- Rural buses run a few times a day; the last one back to Aso station can leave early.
- Aso Shrine's Romon gate and hall collapsed in the 2016 earthquake; parts of the site may still be under repair.
