  • Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
  • Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
  • Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
  • Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.

Punta Cana is a purpose-built resort strip on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, not a town you wander. Almost everyone sleeps inside an all-inclusive and barely leaves it. The airport is one of the busiest in the Caribbean, so flights are cheap and frequent from the US east coast and Canada. Come for the beach and the package price, not for a city.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Inside a resort you walk. Outside, taxis run on fixed zone rates — agree the price before you get in and pay on arrival. Local guaguas are cheap but slow and crowded. Motoconchos are the fastest short hop but helmets are not provided. Renting a car only makes sense if you plan to leave the strip daily.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Saona Island

go

Door to door: 10–12 h

Coach to Bayahibe, then catamaran or speedboat

Long day from Punta Cana; book through your resort or a licensed operator.

Altos de Chavón

caution

Door to door: 6–8 h

Excursion coach via La Romana

Replica hill town above the Chavón river; most of the day is the drive.

Higüey and Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia

go

Door to door: 3–4 h

Local bus or taxi, about 45 min

The country's main pilgrimage church; half a day is enough.

Santo Domingoovernight

Door to door: 3–4 h each way

Expreso Bávaro coach from the Bávaro terminal

Too far for a return day; sleep one or two nights in the Zona Colonial.

Miches and Montaña Redonda

caution

Door to door: 6–8 h

Excursion coach north along the coast

Check road conditions after heavy rain.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Bávaro and Arena Gorda

The main all-inclusive strip: most resorts, widest beach, busiest. 20–30 min from PUJ.

Uvero Alto

North of Bávaro, quieter and more spread out; 40–60 min from PUJ, so transfers cost more.

Cap Cana

Gated luxury zone with Juanillo beach and Punta Espada golf; beach access is for guests and owners only.

Cabeza de Toro and El Cortecito

Smaller hotels and a walkable strip of bars and restaurants; the closest thing to a village.

Watch out

Safety

Resort zones are well policed and the main risk is the sun, alcohol and dehydration. Outside the gates, use hotel-arranged taxis at night, keep jewellery and phones out of sight, and treat the stories some resorts tell about the surrounding area with scepticism.
  • Agree every taxi fare before boarding; drivers take dollars, pesos and euros.
  • Tap water is not for drinking — stick to bottled or purified water and ice.
  • Beach vendors are persistent; a plain "no, gracias" and keep walking works better than arguing.
  • Do not buy turtle shell, coral or dried sea life: it is illegal to export and customs will take it.
  • Hurricane season runs roughly Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct; check your travel insurance covers weather delays.
