Punta Cana
Go for 4–7 nights if you want an all-inclusive beach base with easy flights; skip it if you want towns, food streets and independent travel.
Punta Cana is a purpose-built resort strip on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, not a town you wander. Almost everyone sleeps inside an all-inclusive and barely leaves it. The airport is one of the busiest in the Caribbean, so flights are cheap and frequent from the US east coast and Canada. Come for the beach and the package price, not for a city.

Get around
Inside a resort you walk. Outside, taxis run on fixed zone rates — agree the price before you get in and pay on arrival. Local guaguas are cheap but slow and crowded. Motoconchos are the fastest short hop but helmets are not provided. Renting a car only makes sense if you plan to leave the strip daily.

Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; kiss on the cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping hellos
- Dress: Long trousers in offices, churches, some clubs; avoid: Swimwear off the beach
- Time: Allow flexibility; avoid: Expecting punctual starts socially
- Dominoes: Watch and ask to join; avoid: Interrupting a game
Scams and watch-outs
- Agree every taxi fare before boarding; drivers take dollars, pesos and euros.
- Tap water is not for drinking — stick to bottled or purified water and ice.
- Beach vendors are persistent; a plain "no, gracias" and keep walking works better than arguing.
- Do not buy turtle shell, coral or dried sea life: it is illegal to export and customs will take it.
- Hurricane season runs roughly Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct; check your travel insurance covers weather delays.
Resort zones are well policed and the main risk is the sun, alcohol and dehydration. Outside the gates, use hotel-arranged taxis at night, keep jewellery and phones out of sight, and treat the stories some resorts tell about the surrounding area with scepticism.
