Mackinaw City is a village of about 800 people at the south end of the Mackinac Bridge, and it works as a base rather than a destination in itself. The ferry docks to Mackinac Island are here, the fort and lighthouse sit beside them, and everything tourist-facing is walkable in 15 minutes. Most trips are two nights: one island day, one village day. Without a car your options shrink fast, because there is no local public transport.

Getting around

Walk. The ferry docks, Colonial Michilimackinac, the lighthouse and the main restaurant strip sit within about 1.5 km. There is no local bus service, so a car or a taxi is needed for Wilderness State Park, Headlands and Mill Creek. The bridge bans pedestrians, bicycles and snowmobiles; the bridge authority carries them across for $2 per person or bicycle, and $10 per snowmobile and rider between 08:00 and 20:00.

Safety

Very safe for a tourist village: the real risks are summer traffic on US-23, wind closures on the bridge, and cold water on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron beaches.
  • No public transport in town: without a car you are limited to the walkable core.
  • Summer weekends and holidays fill motels; book weeks ahead for July–August.
  • The Mackinac Bridge closes to traffic when winds exceed 65 mph; otherwise it stays open.
  • Many shops and restaurants shut from November to April; winter travel is quiet and cold.
  • Ferry and island schedules thin out in shoulder season: check the last boat back before you cross.
