Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Münster is the cultural centre of Westphalia and a university city of about 300,000 people, half of them students. The rebuilt Prinzipalmarkt, the cathedral and the Peace Hall sit inside a compact ring road, so most of the city is seen on foot or by bike in a day. It works as a stop between the Ruhr and the Netherlands, or as a base for the flat Münsterland countryside.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

No tram or U-Bahn: walk inside the ring, cycle beyond it. Buses run 05:00–01:00 on weekdays and around the clock at weekends, most lines every 20 min, but all routes change around 21:00 and late gaps reach 70 min. Buy tickets from the driver at a surcharge if machines are scarce; card payment is often not accepted. Rent a bike at Radstation by the station (€8/day, e-bikes and tandems available).

Kreuzviertel

Cafés, bars and student life, 15–20 min walk south-west of the centre; cheaper rooms.

Aasee

Lake views and park, 20–25 min walk from the centre; good with a bike.

Watch out

Safety

Münster is a low-risk city; the real hazards are bicycles on shared paths, wet cobbles and the Saturday crush around the station and Prinzipalmarkt.
  • Red-brick strips on pavements are cycle lanes: stand on them and you will be rung at, or hit.
  • Saturday traffic into the centre is heavy; use the free P+R lots on the main approach roads.
  • Bus ticket machines are sparse and often cash-only; carry coins or buy in the app.
  • Münster's rain comes as many light wet days rather than downpours: pack a shell, not an umbrella you mind losing.
  • The Peace Hall is a small room inside the Rathaus and closes for events: check before you build a day around it.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Münster. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep; Dec for the Christmas markets · avoid Jan–Feb (grey and wet), and Saturday afternoons in the run-up to Christmas · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for FMO and DUS: last bus and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Prinzipalmarkt and Rathaus, the Dom quarter, the Schloss and botanical gardens, the Aasee.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Peace Hall, Picasso Museum, City Museum, Mühlenhof) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Rain-day fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
