Derby

Give Derby one full day, or two nights if you want the Peak District and Kedleston Hall: it is a compact base, not a headline stop.

Derby sits near the middle of England and works as a low-cost base for the southern Peak District, with a compact centre you can walk in half a day. The draw is industrial and railway history, a strong ceramics collection and Joseph Wright paintings, plus Kedleston Hall a short bus ride out. Most travellers pass through on the train between London and Sheffield; one night is enough for the city, two if you add the countryside.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable: Market Place to the cathedral is about 5 minutes on foot. Local buses are run mainly by Arriva and Trent Barton; fares are not good value compared with similar-sized cities, so walk or use a day ticket only if you are heading out to Pride Park or the parks. Two park-and-ride services run from the Meteor Centre in the north and Pride Park in the east. Trains from Derby station reach London St Pancras, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester and Matlock.

Oldest streets, pubs and the cathedral; quiet at night, 5–10 min walk to the Market Place.

City centre / Market Place

Closest to the bus station, QUAD and the shops; best for a one-night stop with bags.

Pride Park

Chain hotels near the station, the football ground and Derby Arena; cheaper, but a 15–20 min walk from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Derby is a normal, generally safe English city; the usual city-centre rules apply. Watch your bag in the Market Place and on late buses, and stick to lit streets around the Cathedral Quarter after pub closing.
  • Some city-centre venues close on Mondays: check before you build a day around one museum.
  • Kedleston Hall is a National Trust property with seasonal opening and separate house and garden times: check the official site.
  • Elvaston Castle Country Park has had little investment in recent years; go for the parkland, not the castle.
  • Match days at Pride Park and cricket days at the County Ground fill buses and hotels: book ahead.
