Give Derby one full day, or two nights if you want the Peak District and Kedleston Hall: it is a compact base, not a headline stop.
Derby sits near the middle of England and works as a low-cost base for the southern Peak District, with a compact centre you can walk in half a day. The draw is industrial and railway history, a strong ceramics collection and Joseph Wright paintings, plus Kedleston Hall a short bus ride out. Most travellers pass through on the train between London and Sheffield; one night is enough for the city, two if you add the countryside.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable: Market Place to the cathedral is about 5 minutes on foot. Local buses are run mainly by Arriva and Trent Barton; fares are not good value compared with similar-sized cities, so walk or use a day ticket only if you are heading out to Pride Park or the parks. Two park-and-ride services run from the Meteor Centre in the north and Pride Park in the east. Trains from Derby station reach London St Pancras, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester and Matlock.
