La Macarena is a small Orinoquía town that exists for one reason: it is the gateway to Caño Cristales, the river that turns red, yellow and green when the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera blooms. You cannot enter the park alone, flights are few, and cash is scarce, so most travellers book a 3-day package from Bogotá. The town itself is a one-street stop with panaderías, a park and a Wednesday shutdown.

Watch out
Safety
- You cannot visit Caño Cristales without a licensed guide; daily visitor numbers are capped and a permit is required.
- Sunscreen and insect repellent are banned inside the park to protect the aquatic plants — bring long sleeves, long trousers and a hat instead.
- Malaria is a real risk in this lowland region; yellow-fever vaccination is commonly required before travel (check with your clinic).
- The single ATM (Banco Agrario) charges high fees, runs out of cash and fails during power cuts — bring enough pesos for the whole stay.
- Flights are postponed by weather and operator issues; build a spare day into the plan.
- Most businesses close on Wednesday, the town's chosen day of rest.
